Shalanda BakerMandela Barnes

We’re excited to announce our two inspiring keynote speakers: Shalanda Baker and Mandela Barnes! Their session will cover emerging ideas in national energy policy and offer actionable takeaways to help you and your business thrive in an evolving market.

Shalanda Baker is the inaugural Vice Provost for Sustainability and Climate Action at the University of Michigan and a globally recognized expert in energy justice. She previously served in the Biden-Harris Administration as the first Deputy Director for Energy Justice and as the Director of the Office of Energy Justice and Equity at the U.S. Department of Energy, where she led equity and justice initiatives. A former professor at Northeastern University and co-founder of the Initiative for Energy Justice, she has spent over a decade researching the equity dimensions of the energy transition. A Fulbright scholar and author of Revolutionary Power: An Activist’s Guide to the Energy Transition, Ms. Baker is also a former Air Force officer and practiced law in Boston and Tokyo.

Mandela Barnes, founder and president of Forward Together Wisconsin, has dedicated his career to community organizing and addressing climate change. Inspired by his parents’ values of economic justice and racial equity, he began his journey as a political organizer for Barack Obama's 2008 campaign and later served as a Wisconsin State Assembly representative from 2013 to 2017. As Wisconsin’s 45th Lieutenant Governor (2019–2023) and the first African American to hold the position, Barnes worked to foster inclusivity and progress. Through Forward Together Wisconsin, he continues to empower communities, advocate for working-class champions, and promote year-round grassroots organizing to amplify diverse voices across the state.
